Baby Steps To Brighter Tomorrow

A very small incident made me think about how we unknowingly start building a gender bias society from the adolescence ,it not always about changing the mind sets and getting a gender neutral society after women join workforce it goes back a very long way and needs to be addressed when we bring up our next generation .

Some days back I took leave from work for my nieces orientation and told her I am going to be with you for the next 2 days of orientation , surprised she asked
“have to told your boss ?’I said I m the boss …..and her expressions were quizzical ...”How can you be the boss ? You don’t have a boy boss??? she again asked .I again reiterated that I am the boss to which she innocently said ‘but you cant scream at your team like a boy ,how can you be the boss ???.....
This very small yet very relevant conversation makes me think the very basic of how we bring up our daughters v/s our sons .The way a girl is brought up believing it is all about fairies and Princess  and all the things Pink

Where as the boys are more about toughness and action –Cars ,planes ,guns ,fights ,

The girls grow up believing they are the princess who need to be pretty and wait for the prince charming to come on a white horse and sweep them away .

The boys believe that they need to act tough ,the clear divide of the toys industry also fuels this belief ,all the things pink and soft are for girls and all the high engagement activities are for boys .
The idea is not to take any of this away from them but to encourage the girls to also participate in action packed activities ,to get them cars if they want to collect them !!!Never say “what will you do with a car ? take a Barbie !”
Get your sunny boy a kitchen set coz he sees his mother cook and wants to do the same Dont say “Boys don’t play with kitchen sets ?” its for girls !!by doing this we prepare them for being equal not just in board rooms but at home too

The awareness begins at home ,the gender equality and empowering every one equally is the way to achieve a society where Girls and boys grow up believing that each one has the ability to become what they desire ,a girl can dream of being a fighter pilot and a boy can become a master chef !

The change has to begin with each one of us to accept and set examples that this generation can follow and next time it is easier to believe “women can also be bosses and lead teams “
